Most surgical patients are told to keep the wound clean, let it heal, and come back if something goes wrong. What they’re rarely told is this: the tissue is most responsive to treatment in the first weeks after surgery — while it’s still in the active healing phase.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive, light-based intervention that works with that biology. Applied in the early weeks post-surgery, it supports your tissue to heal more efficiently, more organisedly, and with a better long-term outcome.

Some complex or revision surgeries may benefit from additional sessions beyond the initial programme — this is assessed and discussed individually.

What the research says
PBM for post-surgical wound healing and scar management is a well-researched area, with clinical evidence supporting its use across surgical contexts from reconstructive breast surgery to orthopaedic procedures.
PBM is well tolerated across a wide range of patients and skin types. Across clinical studies, it has been found to be safe and non-invasive, with no meaningful adverse effects reported at therapeutic doses.
LED-red light reduces post-surgical scar formation — Phase II RCT
Title: Light emitting diode-red light for reduction of post-surgical scarring: Results from a dose-ranging, split-face, randomized controlled trial
Journal: Wound Repair and Regeneration (PubMed Central)
Key finding: LED-RL phototherapy initiated within one week post-surgery demonstrated improved scar pliability and cosmesis. PBM was safely used in the early postoperative period on facial skin and may reduce post-surgical scarring at certain fluences.

Key finding: Near-infrared PBM improved color and elasticity in hypertrophic scars and reduced thickness, malleability, pain, and pruritus following hernia repair, thyroidectomy, and blepharoplasty. Across studies, PBM was well tolerated.

PBM for burn, hypertrophic, and post-surgical scars — Scoping review, 297 patients

Key finding: Across 7 clinical studies and 297 patients, red and near-infrared PBM was found to be a safe, non-invasive adjunct for early burn and post-surgical scar management. Post-surgical scars showed reduced tissue hardness and improved patient-reported outcomes. Near-infrared PBM showed improvements in scar colour, elasticity, thickness, stiffness, pain, and itching.

Key finding: Initiating PBM treatment within 24–72 hours post-operation — provided the wound is stable and sterile — can optimise the cellular environment for repair. Consistent application during the early healing period may reduce the risk of hypertrophic scar formation by modulating fibroblast activity and reducing chronic inflammation.
